Rochester wins road opener, 4-2
ROCHESTER RED WINGS shortstop Ronald Torreyes hit a one-out home run Thursday to give his team a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Two other Rochester infielders also went deep to pace the team to a 4-2 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in Allentown, Pa.

Three long balls, one by an unexpected source, led the Rochester Red Wings to a 4-2 triumph Thursday, April 4, over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Rochester also received outstanding pitching as three moundsmen combined to strike out 16 IronPigs batters.
Shortstop Ronald Torreyes (at left) started off his season and the team’s with a one-out line drive homer to left field in the top of the first inning. The Red Wings put two more runners on base that inning but could not add to their run total. In 643 minor league games, with 2,416 at bats, the four-bagger Thursday was Torreyes’ 23rd home run. In 229 major league games, with 576 at bats, the 5’8″ Venezuelan has hit four homers. The home run came on the first pitch Torreyes saw in 2019.
A deep shot would be more expected of Wilin Rosario, (center left) and he showed his power with a homer to left field in the fifth inning which tied the game at two. The IronPigs scored twice in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Rosario, a native of the Dominican Republic, hit his blast with two outs. Rosario has 71 dingers in 447 major league games and 69 in the minors while playing in 436 games.
The winning runs came in the sixth inning after Lehigh Valley removed their starting pitcher, Cole Irvin. Edgar Garcia walked Rochester’s Zander Wiel and then surrendered a two-run homer by Dominican Republic native Randy Cesar (lower left) to left-center field. Cesar, in his minor league career, now has 31 long balls in 1,916 at bats through 518 games. Garcia took the loss for the IronPigs.
The three opening night home runs were nearly half of the seven the Minnesota Twins top farm team clubbed all of last April.
It was not a cold day in Allentown, with the game time temperature at 57 degrees, so coal was not needed to keep anyone warm. But each team started a pitcher with a similar first name. While Cole Irvin started to the homestanding IronPigs, Kohl Stewart took the ball for Rochester. He went five innings, allowing the two first inning runs during a 34-pitch effort. He allowed the two runs on three hits while walking two. He sent eight IronPigs back to the dugout following strikeouts.
After Stewart was lifted, Rochester got four perfect innings from right-handed relievers Ryan Eades and Tyler Duffey. Both struck out four batters while allowing just one baserunner when Duffey hit Andrew Romine with a pitcher. Four batters, two for each team, were hit by pitches. Stewart was credited with the win, Eades with a hold and Duffey earned the save.
The teams continue their season-opening series Friday at 7:05 p.m. in Coca-Cola Park. Rochester will start righty Chase De Jong to the mound to face Enyel De Los Santos. In 2018 De Jong pitched for AA Arkansas, the Red Wings and he saw time with the parent twins.
WINGS THINGS: Rosario hit 28 homers for Colorado in 2018 … Cesar had a 42-game hit streak in 2018 for AA Corpus Christi – a Texas League record … Lamonte Wade Jr. led the team with three hits Thursday and he also walked once … The Wings went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. That was an issued that hounded the team last season.
