ROCHESTER – Rochester Red Wings manager Joel Skinner and his 2019 team will meet with members of the media Tuesday, April 2 prior to a workout – weather permitting – at Frontier Field. The roster of players who will start the 2019 International League season with the Minnesota Twins top farm team was announced Monday, April 1.
Four players, including three pitchers, will start the campaign on the injured reserve list. The non-pitcher on IR is infielder Nick Gordon (acute gastritis). After starting the 2018 season in AA, Gordon was promoted to Rochester. He is the younger brother of Major Leaguer Dee Gordon.
According to a press release issued by the Red Wings Monday, there are five starters and eight relievers on the opening day mound staff. They are: starters RH Chase De Jong, RH Zack Littell, LH Justin Nicolino, RH Kohl Stewart, and LH Lewis Thorpe. Relief pitchers are: RH Austin Adams, RH Tyler Duffey, RH Ryan Eades, RH Preston Guilmet, RH Mike Morin, RH Jake Reed, RH Fernando Romero, and LH Andrew Vasquez.
The remainder of the roster is comprised of: catchers Wynston Sawyer and Tomas Telis; infielders Randy Cesar, Adam Rosale, Wilin Rosario, Ronald Torreyes and Jordany Valdespin; and outfielders John Andreoli, Luke Raley, Brent Rooker, LaMonte Wade Jr., and Zander Wiel.
Besides Gordon, the three pitchers starting the year on the injured reserve list are: RHP DJ Baxendale (left ankle sprain); LHP Stephen Gonsalves (left elbow flexor/pronator strain); and RHP Zack Weiss (left oblique strain).
Joining the coaching staff alongside Skinner, who will be at the Red Wings helm for a second year, are: hitting coach Javier Valentin; pitching coach Stu Cliburn; bullpen coach Mike McCarthy; athletic trainer Chris Johnson; strength and conditioning coach Jacob Dean; and video coordinator Josh Muraida.
Rochester is scheduled to open the 2019 AAA season Thursday, April 4 at the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. The home opener, with a 51 degree game time temperature guarantee offered by Dan Mason, Red Wings general manager, is the following Thursday, April 11, at 6:05 p.m.
